Quarterly taxes without the panic

Lesson 1 of 3 · 325 words · free to read, no account needed

The April surprise that staggers new owners is not a tax problem; it is a bookkeeping illusion. An employee's taxes vanished from the paycheck before it arrived. An owner's do not — the money lands in the account looking spendable, and it never was.

The fix: one transfer a week

The mechanical fix costs one transfer a week: a separate savings account named TAXES, fed a fixed percentage of every dollar collected, touched only when the quarterly payment is due.

What percentage is a question for a CPA who knows your state, your entity and your deductions. It's commonly somewhere between a fifth and a third of profit. We won't guess YOUR number here, because the wrong guess is exactly the panic we're preventing.

The lesson's job is the mechanism: the percentage comes off the top on collection day, automatically, the way an employer would have taken it. You cannot spend money that already left.

Why quarterly, not April

Why quarterly and not April: the IRS expects payment through the year, and underpaying as you go can add penalties on top of the bill — dates and thresholds are the CPA conversation, booked once, in your first profitable quarter rather than your first April. One hour with a CPA turns the whole thing from dread into a date on the calendar.

This builds the habit the rest of the Blue Collar Wealth track stands on: sort money by what it is FOR the day it lands — taxes, materials, your wage, the slow-season floor. One pile always looks bigger than it is.

WORKSHEET 1. Open the second account this week and name it TAXES. The name is the fence. 2. Book one hour with a CPA who works with trades businesses; leave with your percentage and your payment dates. 3. Set the transfer rule — every deposit, same day, no judgment calls — and run it on the next dollar that comes in.
