One ton of asphalt covers about 83 sq ft at 2 inches compacted
The one ton you can estimate in your head
A ton of hot-mix covers about 83 square feet at a 2 inch compacted depth.
That comes straight from the calculator's formula: area × (thickness ÷ 12) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000 = tons. Run it backward for one ton: 2,000 lb ÷ 145 lb/ft³ = 13.79 ft³. At 2 inches (0.167 ft) that is 82.76 sq ft, call it 83.
145 lb/ft³ is the density of compacted hot-mix, not what comes off the truck loose. The thickness you type in has to be the finished, compacted depth, not the loose lift you rake out.
On a 1,000 sq ft drive at 2 inches: 1,000 × 0.167 × 145 = 24,167 lb, or 12.08 tons before waste.
A 5% waste allowance brings that to 12.69 tons. That extra 0.6 ton is there for an uneven base and a plant ticket that runs light, not a guess.
Thickness is a straight multiplier, so it adds up fast. The same 1,000 sq ft at 3 inches needs 250 ft³, 36,250 lb, 18.13 tons before waste, almost half a ton more per inch.
